Nreal, the company behind the Air AR glasses, has rebranded to XREAL and announced a new Beam device. The company said it has decided to change its name following "disputes regarding the Nreal mark". The brand has opted for a new "X" in its name to show its dedication to expanding reality.

The XREAL Beam is an accessory for the Air glasses; the company claims it is the first device of its kind to market. The gadget lets you connect the AR headset to consoles, such as the Nintendo Switch, with support for iOS and Windows, and SteamOS compatibility in the pipeline. The Beam uses Spatial Display with 3DoF (Three Degrees of Freedom) tracking to keep the picture still if you move your head but shift the image with your body as you adjust your position. The movement of the display is smooth, which XREAL says could enhance the experience in a moving vehicle by reducing the impact of any bumps in the road. Plus, a Sideview produces a smaller version of the display to one side, allowing you to see your environment while consuming content.

The virtual display is 201-in (~511 cm) wide at full size with a 90Hz frame rate. The Beam connects wirelessly to the XREAL Air glasses, with DRM content streaming due later. You can also connect via XREAL C-C or H-C cables to reduce latency for gaming. The gadget can last for four hours with typical use or seven days in standby mode, charging at 27W to 50% in 30 minutes. The accessory has a LED light, USB-C in and out ports and built-in control buttons. The XREAL Beam will launch on June 1st; the device's price has yet to be announced.
